Munich Europe Tournament 1941
Gösta Stoltz won the 16-player Munich Europe Tournament with 12/15, finishing a point and a half clear of Alexander Alekhine and Erik Lundin. The complete 120-game score set preserves a commanding result from the second Europaturnier, held in wartime.
A tournament in wartime
The event was the second Europaturnier, following the first edition in Stuttgart in 1939. It was organised in Munich by Ehrhardt Post, the head of the Nazi-controlled Grossdeutscher Schachbund; that political setting is inseparable from the tournament's history.
Sixteen players met once each over 15 rounds. Every scheduled pairing is present here, for the full total of 120 games.
Stoltz breaks clear
Stoltz scored ten wins, four draws, and one loss to reach 12 points. Alekhine and Lundin shared second on 10½, while Efim Bogoljubow followed on 9½.
Stoltz won by 1½ points with 12/15. The games and a separate crosstable agree on every final score.
The games
Of the 120 games, 77 were decisive and 43 drawn. The table gives all 16 players' totals, the shared second place and Stoltz's clear first.
