The second edition of Sarajevo's Bosna international gathered twelve masters for an eleven-round round-robin. Two pillars of Yugoslav chess, Borislav Ivkov and Petar Trifunović, finished level on 7/11 to share first place, a half-point ahead of the young Milan Matulović and Rudolf Marić.
The Bosna international
Sarajevo's international tournament had begun the previous year, in 1957, when Stojan Puc took the inaugural title. This 1958 event was the second edition — a twelve-player single round-robin of eleven rounds and sixty-six games. The field mixed Yugoslav masters with visiting Europeans, among them the veteran Erich Eliskases, an Austrian-born master once reckoned among the world's strongest in the late 1930s, together with Germany's Ludwig Rellstab and Austria's Josef Lokvenc.
Ivkov and Trifunović on top
At the front, Borislav Ivkov and Petar Trifunović — two of Yugoslavia's leading grandmasters — finished level on 7/11 to share first place. Rudolf Marić and Milan Matulović followed a half-point back on 6½, with Eliskases and Braslav Rabar on 6. For Ivkov it was the first of two Bosna titles; he would share first here again in 1967. For the famously solid Trifunović it was another strong result close to home.
