The Hoogovens at Wijk aan Zee

The tournament staged each January by the Royal Dutch steelworks, Koninklijke Hoogovens, had moved from Beverwijk to the seaside village of Wijk aan Zee in 1968, and by 1970 it was a fixture of the European calendar. This 32nd edition brought sixteen players together for a single round-robin — 120 games over fifteen rounds — with an international grandmaster group led by Soviet, Yugoslav, and Czechoslovak visitors alongside the strongest Dutch players.

The field ran from Mark Taimanov and Vlastimil Hort at the top down to the Dutch stalwarts Nicolaas Cortlever, Hans Ree, and Kick Langeweg, and included Borislav Ivkov, Lubomir Kavalek, Pal Benko, Miroslav Filip, Jan Hein Donner, and the young Bojan Kurajica.

Taimanov unbeaten

Taimanov, the Soviet grandmaster and former World Championship Candidate, dominated. He scored nine wins and six draws for 12/15 and went through the whole event without losing a game — the only unbeaten player in the tournament.

That left the chasing pack fighting for the minor places. Hort took second on 10½, Ivkov third on 10, Kavalek fourth on 9½, and Kurajica fifth on 9 — a spread that underlined just how far clear Taimanov had finished.
