1. 4…Nf6 E. Schmidt's defence.
2. 6.e5 This move is recommended by Steinitz in his 'Modern Chess Instructor.' L. Paulsen here played 6. Kt to Q B 3. 6. Q B to K 3 is also good.
3. 8.c4 A good continuation here is 8. P to K B 4.
4. 9.b3 The same continuation occurred in the last game of the match between Blackburne and Zukertort; Black won. Steinitz recommends 9. P to K B 4. In a game by correspondence between Chardin, of Samara (White), and Schiffers, of St. Petersburg (Black), the following continuation took place: 9. P to K B 4, Q to Q Kt 5, ch; 10. K to Q sq(!), B to Q B 4; 11. Kt to Q R 3 (11. Q to K 4 would have been stronger), Q x Kt (?) (11.... Kt to Q Kt 3, with a good attack, would have been better); 12. P x Q, Kt to Q B 6, ch; 13. K to Q B 2, Kt x Q; 14. B x Kt, Q R to Kt sq; 15. B to Q Kt 2, Castles; 16. Q R to Q sq, P to Q 4; 17. K R to K sq, K R to Q sq (?), and White won. Black ought to have played 17.... P x P; 18. P to Q R 4(!), B to K B 7; 19. R to K B sq, R x B, ch; 20. K x R, P to Q B 6, ch; 21. K to B 2 (!), B x B; 22. R x B, B x R, ch; 23. K x B, R to Kt sq; 24. R to Q B 2, and a draw ensues.
5. 13…fxe5 The consequence of White having omitted to play P to K B 4.
6. 29.b5 Why not 29. R x P, Q x R; 30. Q x R to draw? White needlessly gives up his Pawns; he eventually lost the game only through this.
7. 29…axb5 If Q B P x P, then 30. Q to K 4, ch, and takes the P at Q 3. [A lively Pawn ending follows.—Ed.]
