Chigorin Memorial 1980

Panchenko's grandmaster breakthrough in Sochi
3–25 September 1980 · Sochi, USSR
Panchenko won with 10½/15

Alexander Panchenko won the strongest tournament of his playing career at the 1980 Chigorin Memorial, finishing unbeaten on 10½/15 ahead of Yuri Balashov and Eugenio Torre and earning his second grandmaster norm. He later became one of Russia's best-known trainers.

A Category XI field

The 1980 edition of Sochi's annual Chigorin Memorial was rated Category XI, with an average rating of 2517, a strong international field. The Soviet players included Yuri Balashov, Rafael Vaganian, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, Evgeny Sveshnikov and the defending champion Nukhim Rashkovsky, and the visitors ranged from Eugenio Torre, who in 1974 had become Asia's first grandmaster, to Hungary's Iván Faragó, Yugoslavia's Borislav Ivkov, the young Dutchman John van der Wiel, Iceland's Jón Árnason, East Germany's Rainer Knaak and Czechoslovakia's Vlastimil Jansa.

Panchenko's fortnight

Panchenko, a 26-year-old from Chelyabinsk, scored 10½ from 15 without defeat — six wins and nine draws — to edge out Balashov by half a point, with Torre third on 9½ and Vaganian and van der Wiel next on 9. The win fulfilled the second criterion of his grandmaster norm, and FIDE awarded him the title that same year.

It proved the peak of his playing career and the doorway to something larger: soon afterward Panchenko was asked to head the All-Russian chess school that came to bear his stamp, where over the following decade he trained a generation of future grandmasters including Sergei Rublevsky, Alisa Galliamova and Sergey Volkov. His two-volume Theory and Practice of Chess Endings is still studied today.
