Göteborg Jubilee Tournament 1971
Ulf Andersson and Vlastimil Hort shared first in Göteborg with 8½/11, half a point ahead of world champion Boris Spassky. The city-jubilee tournament gave the twenty-year-old Andersson his first grandmaster norm.
◈Göteborg's 350th-anniversary tournament
The Göteborg Chess Federation and Göteborgs-Posten organized the international with support from the city's Jubilee Committee. Twelve players met in Stenhammarsalen for one complete circuit.
The field included reigning world champion Spassky, former women's world champion Nona Gaprindashvili, Szabó, Arturo Pomar and a strong Swedish contingent. All 66 games survive in the archive.
◈A breakthrough for Andersson
Andersson went unbeaten, defeated Hort head to head and shared first on 8½. Hort also reached 8½, while Spassky finished immediately behind them on eight.
The result gave Andersson his first grandmaster norm. Contemporary reporting places the final round on 31 July; Mega dates its six complete scores one day early, so the archive preserves those source Game dates while using the authoritative event span here.
