The 1955 Interzonal moved to Gothenburg, where David Bronstein won for a second time — unbeaten, as he had been in 1948. The tournament is remembered just as vividly for a single afternoon in which three Argentine masters walked into the same prepared line and were routed together: the famous "Argentine tragedy."

Bronstein unbeaten again

Twenty-one players gathered in Gothenburg for a single round-robin of 210 games, with the top nine qualifying for the 1956 Candidates in Amsterdam. Bronstein, who had earned direct entry through his 1953 Candidates finish, dominated: ten wins, ten draws, no losses, and first place on 15/20.

Paul Keres took second on 13½ and the 21-year-old Argentine Oscar Panno third on 13, ahead of Petrosian, Geller and Szabó. The teenaged Boris Spassky came through in his first Interzonal to claim one of the qualifying places. A first-reserve spot was settled separately, Georgy Ilivitsky edging Ludek Pachman in a six-game play-off (one win and five draws); that short match is not part of this archive, which holds the round-robin itself.

The Argentine tragedy

The tournament's most retold moment came in round 14. Argentina's three grandmasters — Najdorf, Panno and Pilnik — had spent a rest day preparing a sharp new wrinkle in the Sicilian Najdorf, the line 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Be7 8.Qf3 h6 9.Bh4 g5, and hoped to spring it on their Soviet opponents. Astonishingly, all three Soviets obliged: the identical position appeared simultaneously on the boards of Keres–Najdorf, Geller–Panno and Spassky–Pilnik.

Efim Geller, thinking fastest, uncorked the refutation with a piece sacrifice on move 11 and the crushing 13.Bb5!; Keres and Spassky simply followed his moves. The Soviets won all three games, a clean 3–0, and the variation — ever after known as the Gothenburg Variation — was considered refuted until Bobby Fischer revived the defence in 1958.

“A unique instance in the history of chess.”
— Efim Geller, on the three simultaneous twin games of round 14
