Sarajevo's biggest edition yet — sixteen players over fifteen rounds — produced one of the strongest fields in the tournament's history. Soviet master Alexey Suetin came through it with 10½/15 to win outright, a half point ahead of Milan Matulović and Lev Polugaevsky, in a year that also brought him the Grandmaster title.
A deeper, stronger field
Where earlier Sarajevo tournaments had run to twelve players, the 1965 edition expanded to sixteen for a fifteen-round round-robin — 120 games in all. The entry was cosmopolitan: Soviets Suetin and Polugaevsky, Bulgaria's Georgi Tringov, the Hungarians Győző Forintos and Levente Lengyel, East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann and Burkhard Malich, the young Czechoslovak Vlastimil Hort, and a strong Yugoslav contingent led by Matulović.
Suetin set the pace and held it, finishing on 10½. Matulović and Polugaevsky shared second on 10, with Tringov fourth on 9½ and Forintos and Uhlmann next on 9 — a tightly packed leaderboard behind the winner.
A grandmaster is made
The win was among the best results of Suetin's career and came the same year FIDE awarded him the Grandmaster title. A respected theoretician and author as well as a strong practical player, Suetin would remain a fixture of the Soviet tournament circuit for years afterward.
