Wijk aan Zee 1971 (Hoogovens)
In a field that included former World Champion Tigran Petrosian, it was Viktor Korchnoi who came out on top of the 33rd Hoogovens tournament — winning by half a point with 10/15 as four of the world's finest grandmasters crowded in a single point behind him.
A heavyweight field on the North Sea
The 33rd Hoogovens tournament, again a sixteen-player single round-robin of 120 games, drew one of the strongest fields of its era to Wijk aan Zee. Alongside Viktor Korchnoi came the former World Champion Tigran Petrosian, the veteran greats Svetozar Gligorić, Fridrik Olafsson, Borislav Ivkov, and Miguel Najdorf, and Czechoslovakia's Vlastimil Hort.
The steelworks' January event had by now become a proving ground where established champions met a fast-rising younger generation, and the 1971 draw sheet mixed both in equal measure.
Korchnoi holds off the pack
Korchnoi finished clear first on 10/15, half a point ahead of a four-man logjam. Olafsson, Ivkov, Gligorić, and Petrosian all shared second place on 9½ — a former World Champion among them, kept out of first only by Korchnoi's steadiness.
Behind them, a knot of the game's coming talents — Ulf Andersson, Henrique Mecking, and Robert Hübner — tied on 8½ with Hort, a snapshot of the generation that would shape 1970s chess. At the foot of the table, Carel van den Berg managed only 2 points.
