Ulf Andersson arrived at the 45th Hoogovens tournament ranked fourth in the world — and played exactly the chess that had taken him there. The Swede went through the Category XII field without losing a game, five wins and eight draws for 9/13, edging out Zoltán Ribli by half a point. Among his victims was Viktor Korchnoi, beaten with the black pieces while Andersson led the tournament.
◈A Category XII gathering
The 45th edition drew one of the strongest fields of the era — Category XII, with fourteen players over thirteen rounds. Viktor Korchnoi, the two-time world-championship challenger, headlined alongside defending co-champion John Nunn, the Americans Yasser Seirawan and Walter Browne, Hungary's Zoltán Ribli, Vlastimil Hort, Jonathan Speelman, and Iceland's Friðrik Ólafsson, the former FIDE President.
Korchnoi's tournament became a spectacle of its own: thirteen games producing five wins, six losses and only two draws — the fewest draws of anyone in the field — for a mid-table 6/13.
◈Andersson's quiet masterclass
Andersson was famous for exactly this: a very solid positional player who drew a high percentage of his games and was renowned as one of the great endgame artists, capable of winning seemingly unwinnable positions in very long games. In January 1983 he stood at the peak of his career — fourth on the FIDE rating list — and at Wijk aan Zee the method delivered a clear tournament victory.
Five wins, eight draws, no defeats. The signature moment came in round eight, when the tournament leader took the black pieces against Korchnoi and won. Ribli chased him to the end, also unbeaten on 8½, with Hort and Browne sharing third on 8 and Nunn — the defending co-champion — fifth on 7½. In the ten-player B-group, the Dutch grandmaster Gert Ligterink took first with 6½.
