Zandvoort 1936
In the summer of 1936, at the North Sea resort of Zandvoort, a 21-year-old from New York went through eleven rounds without losing a game. Reuben Fine won the tournament outright — a full point ahead of the reigning World Champion, Max Euwe, on Euwe's home soil — an early signal that a new generation had arrived.
◈Holland's first great international since 1928
Zandvoort 1936 was the first major international tournament held in the Netherlands since 1928, and it fell in a crowded summer — squeezed between the great Moscow and Nottingham events of the same year. Twelve players met for a single round-robin at the Grand Hotel in the seaside town of Zandvoort.
The field mixed generations. Reigning World Champion Max Euwe headed it on home soil; the 20-year-old Paul Keres played in Botvinnik's place; and the veterans Savielly Tartakower, Efim Bogoljubow, Géza Maróczy, Ernst Grünfeld, and Rudolf Spielmann brought decades of experience. The surprise was the youngest star of the American school, Reuben Fine.
◈Fine goes through unbeaten
Fine scored 8½ from 11 without losing a game, finishing a full point clear of Euwe on 7½. Keres and Tartakower shared third on 6½, ahead of Bogoljubow and Maróczy on 6. The champion underperformed on his own ground, later putting his form down to exhaustion and a lack of preparation, and dropping decisive games to both Fine and Bogoljubow.
For Fine the result was part of a breakout year that established him among the world's best. Within weeks he would take his place in the five-champion field at Nottingham, and two years later he would tie for first at AVRO 1938 against the strongest field ever assembled.
