The seventh Bosna international drew a genuinely strong sixteen-player field to Sarajevo. Two rising stars from behind the Iron Curtain — the Soviet grandmaster Lev Polugaevsky and East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann — pulled clear of the pack and shared first place on 10½/15, a point ahead of the Yugoslav grandmaster Borislav Ivkov.
A strong international field
By its seventh edition the Sarajevo Bosna tournament had grown into a sixteen-player single round-robin — fifteen rounds and 120 games in all, played in the spring of 1964. The field reached well beyond Yugoslavia: the Soviet grandmasters Lev Polugaevsky and Eduard Gufeld, East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann, the Czechoslovak stars Vlastimil Hort and Luděk Pachman, and Romania's Victor Ciocâltea joined a home contingent led by Borislav Ivkov, Petar Trifunović, Bruno Parma and Milan Matulović.
Polugaevsky and Uhlmann pull clear
Polugaevsky and Uhlmann, who drew their individual game in the opening round, ended the event level at the top on 10½/15 to share first place. Ivkov was third on 9½, Hort fourth on 9, and Pachman and Trifunović shared fifth on 8½. For Polugaevsky, then in his twenties, it was one of the results that would carry him into the world's elite; Uhlmann was already East Germany's finest player and a fixture of the international circuit.
