The fourth edition of the Interpolis tournament kept Tilburg's reputation as the strongest annual round-robin in the Netherlands. Reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov won it with 7½/11, finishing clear of Lajos Portisch to claim his third Tilburg title in four years.
The fourth Interpolis
Launched in 1977 and backed by the insurer Interpolis, the Tilburg tournament had quickly become one of the premier elite events on the calendar, a twelve-player round-robin staged each autumn in the Dutch city. The 1980 field was a classic Tilburg cast spanning several generations: alongside Karpov came Lajos Portisch, Jan Timman, Boris Spassky, Gennadi Sosonko, the former World Champion Mikhail Tal, Bent Larsen, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Hübner, Zoltán Ribli, Ulf Andersson and Lubomir Kavalek.
As so often in this period, the reigning World Champion set the standard. Karpov had already won Tilburg in 1977 and 1979, and he arrived in 1980 at the height of his powers as champion, a role he had held since 1975.
Karpov in command
Karpov took clear first with 7½ points from eleven games, a half point ahead of Lajos Portisch on 7 and with Jan Timman third on 6½. It was his third Tilburg victory, and his second in succession after 1979.
It was one more big tournament win for Karpov as World Champion; he made a habit of winning the strongest events he played in.
