USSR First League — Tashkent 1980

The First League beneath the 48th Soviet Championship gathered eighteen players at Tashkent, among them Maia Chiburdanidze, the reigning Women's World Champion, competing in the open pyramid. Alexander Beliavsky won it clearly with 11½/17, a full point clear of the field — and three months later, at Vilnius, climbed the second rung too, sharing the Soviet Championship itself.

◇A clear leader, a crowded chase

Beliavsky's 11½ stood a full point ahead of Vitaly Tseshkovsky and Sergey Dolmatov, tied for second on 10½. Behind them, four players — Yuri Razuvaev, Gennadi Kuzmin, Oleg Romanishin and Nukhim Rashkovsky — finished level on 10, filling out the rest of the seven qualifying places; Evgeny Sveshnikov and Vereslav Eingorn, tied on 9½, missed out by half a point.

Chiburdanidze's presence was itself notable: already Women's World Champion since 1978, she entered the same regional pyramid as the men and finished fourteenth on 7 — a sign that the Soviet qualification system, unlike the separate women's championship cycle, ran everyone through the same ladder when they chose to enter it.

◇Beliavsky's double, Tashkent to Vilnius

The Vilnius final, delayed into the new year by the 1980 Olympiad, ended with Beliavsky sharing the title with Lev Psakhis on 10½/17 apiece — the second of what would eventually be four Soviet championships for Beliavsky, won across three different decades.

His fellow Tashkent qualifiers had mixed fortunes in the final: Romanishin tied for fourth on 10, Dolmatov finished sixth on 9½, Kuzmin and Tseshkovsky were among those on 9½ just behind, and Rashkovsky placed eleventh on 8½. Razuvaev, who had tied for fourth at Tashkent, fell furthest — down to seventeenth on 6 in Vilnius.
