Zagreb 1965 (Tournament of Peace)
The inaugural Turnir mira — the Tournament of Peace — assembled twenty grandmasters in Zagreb for a single round-robin. Borislav Ivkov and Wolfgang Uhlmann shared first on 13½/19, finishing ahead of reigning World Champion Tigran Petrosian; because the title was shared, the prize sculpture meant for a lone winner went to no one.

The city of Zagreb and its leading players founded the Tournament of Peace in 1965, staging it as a contribution to the United Nations' Year of International Cooperation, declared for the twentieth anniversary of the UN's founding. The result was a formidable twenty-player, single round-robin of nineteen rounds — 190 games — headed by reigning World Champion Tigran Petrosian.
The field mixed the world elite with strong Yugoslav hosts: alongside Petrosian came Lajos Portisch, David Bronstein, Bent Larsen, Bruno Parma, and the Zagreb players Dražen Marović, Dragoljub Minić, Mato Damjanović, Mijo Udovčić, and Mario Bertok.
◈A shared crown
Borislav Ivkov and Wolfgang Uhlmann pulled clear together, each finishing on 13½/19 to share first place — for Ivkov, one of the finest results of his career. Petrosian took third on 12½, a point behind. Portisch, on 12, beat the players above him but drew too often against the tail to challenge for the title, and Bruno Parma — the only competitor to go undefeated — could finish no higher than fifth on 12.
A sculpture, the "Horseman of Peace," had been commissioned for the champion. Because Ivkov and Uhlmann tied at the top, neither man received it.
◈A lasting fixture
This first Tournament of Peace became a recurring Zagreb institution, its name and its ideal of chess as international goodwill outliving the 1965 event and reviving in later decades. Its debut, headed by the World Champion and settled by a two-way tie, gave the series a fittingly dramatic start.
