Bucharest 1953
The 1953 tournament was the strongest of the Bucharest editions — twenty players, five of them Soviet, in what is often called the finest international event held in Romania during the twentieth century. Alexander Tolush, the attacking Leningrader who coached the young Boris Spassky, won it outright with 14/19, and the result brought him the grandmaster title.
◈The strongest field Romania had seen
For its third edition the Bucharest tournament assembled twenty players over a 19-round round-robin, 190 games in all. The Soviet Union sent a formidable quintet: Alexander Tolush, Vasily Smyslov, Tigran Petrosian, Isaac Boleslavsky, and a 16-year-old Boris Spassky making his international debut under Tolush's guidance.
The rest of the field was strong too — László Szabó of Hungary, Gedeon Barcza, Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, the Belgian grandmaster Albéric O'Kelly de Galway, Poland's Bogdan Śliwa and a group of Romanian hosts. The field even carried two masters named Szabó — László Szabó of Hungary near the top and Ştefan Szabo of Romania in mid-table — so the cross table shows the surname twice.
◈Tolush ahead of Petrosian
Tolush played the tournament of his life, scoring 14/19 from ten wins, eight draws and a single defeat — that one loss coming against Smyslov. Petrosian finished a point behind on 13, the only other player to go through the event unbeaten, and Smyslov took third on 12½.
The win was decisive for Tolush's career: it earned him the international grandmaster title and stood, by his own reckoning, as its high point. An imaginative attacker with famously uneven results, he never again matched this run at the very top of a major field.
◈Spassky's first steps
Bucharest 1953 was also the international coming-out of Boris Spassky, then sixteen. He held his own among grandmasters, sharing the group just behind the leaders alongside Boleslavsky and László Szabó. Tolush was his trainer, and the pairing at Bucharest opened an eight-year partnership that helped carry Spassky toward the world title.
