Capablanca Memorial 1964

A shared crown for Smyslov and Uhlmann
26 August – 26 September 1964 · Havana, Cuba
Smyslov and Uhlmann shared first, each 16/21 (no play-off)

The third Capablanca Memorial ended without a sole champion. Former World Champion Vasily Smyslov and East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann finished level on 16/21, half a point ahead of Mark Taimanov, and shared first place in Havana.

The third memorial

By 1964 the Torneo Internacional Capablanca in Memoriam was firmly established, and the third edition again drew a strong, Soviet-leaning field to Havana for a single round-robin of twenty-one rounds. Among the entrants were former world champion Vasily Smyslov, Mark Taimanov and Lajos Portisch, the American Larry Evans, the veteran Swede Gideon Ståhlberg, and East Germany's Wolfgang Uhlmann.

The tournament ran from late August into late September 1964.

Two share the title

Smyslov and Uhlmann finished tied on 16/21 to share first place, a half-point clear of Taimanov on 15½. Evans took fourth on 14½ and Portisch fifth on 14. There was no play-off: the two leaders were declared joint winners.

For Uhlmann it was one of his best international results, sharing first with a former world champion in a full-strength field; for Smyslov it was another strong finish in the years after his title matches. A year later the memorial made far bigger headlines, when Bobby Fischer played in the 1965 edition by teletype from New York.
