Bobby Fischer scored 7/9 to win the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix by half a point over former world champion Vasily Smyslov. Forty-one games were played; Volf Bergraser's final four pairings became forfeits after illness forced him to withdraw.
Grandmaster chess returns to Monaco
The international grandmaster group brought elite tournament chess back to Monte Carlo more than sixty years after the celebrated 1901–1904 congresses. Fischer, Smyslov, Efim Geller, Bent Larsen and Svetozar Gligorić headed a ten-player field at the Hall du Centenaire.
The grandmaster event was the top section of a broader festival. The separately labeled Masters A and Masters B groups had their own fields and standings and are not stages of this archive.
Fischer by half a point
Fischer began with five straight wins and finished on 7/9: six wins, two draws and one loss. Smyslov went unbeaten on 6½, while Larsen and Geller followed on 6.
Geller inflicted Fischer's only defeat in the final round, but the American's earlier margin was enough. The Monaco victory was Fischer's first tournament outside the United States in five years.
Forty-one games, four forfeits
Volf Bergraser completed five games before pneumonia forced his withdrawal. The contemporary final table marks his remaining four pairings as forfeits rather than played games.
The source database records those forfeits as games with a single move. They aren't included here, which leaves the 41 games actually played; the official standings still count the four points awarded.
