Vienna 1908

A jubilee tournament, and a three-way tie for first
23 March – 17 April 1908 · Vienna, Austria-Hungary
Duras, Maróczy and Schlechter shared first on 14/19

Held at the Vienna Chess Club to honour the sixtieth anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph's accession, this was one of the grand jubilee tournaments of the late Habsburg era. Twenty masters played, and after a month of fighting chess three of them stood level at the top: Oldřich Duras, Géza Maróczy, and Carl Schlechter — a rare triple tie that no tie-break separated.

A tournament fit for a jubilee

The year 1908 marked the sixtieth anniversary of Franz Joseph I's elevation as Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, and the Empire celebrated with a string of high-profile chess events. The Vienna Chess Club's international tournament was the grandest of them, gathering twenty masters for a single round-robin from late March into April.

The field mixed established stars with rising talent: the Viennese hero Carl Schlechter, the great Hungarian Géza Maróczy, the Bohemian Oldřich Duras, and Akiba Rubinstein at the height of his powers, alongside Richard Teichmann, Rudolf Spielmann, Frank Marshall, and a nineteen-year-old debutant named Richard Réti.

Three champions, level at the line

Schlechter led for much of the event, but Maróczy reeled him back in with a win over Duras, and Duras himself surged home with a final-round victory over Curt von Bardeleben to join the leaders. All three finished on 14 out of 19, and the tournament was declared a shared first — no tie-break in the records separates them.

Rubinstein came fourth on 13, a half-length adrift and a touch disappointing after his brilliant 1907, though he still produced positional masterpieces along the way. At the other end of the table the young Réti had a chastening debut, scoring just three draws against sixteen losses for last place — a start that gave no hint of the influential grandmaster and theorist he would become.

“He played the opening haphazardly... and then had an ability to outplay anyone from virtually any position.”
