The 1963 Hoogovens invitation group was a seventeen-round test across an eighteen-player field. Jan Hein Donner won with 12/17, holding off David Bronstein by half a point while Herman Pilnik, Borislav Ivkov and Bruno Parma shared third.
The expanded invitation group
Eighteen players contested the Beverwijk top group, each meeting the other seventeen once. The resulting 153 games form a complete single round-robin and match the official Tata Steel crosstable pairing for pairing.
The field was deep: Donner and Bronstein were joined by Pilnik, Ivkov, Parma, Aleksandar Matanović, Yuri Averbakh, Gideon Ståhlberg, Karl Robatsch and a broad Dutch and international contingent.
Donner by half a point
Donner reached 12/17 to take clear first. Bronstein finished second on 11½, and Pilnik, Ivkov and Parma shared third on 11.
The standings stayed tightly bunched directly behind the winner, but Donner's extra half-point was enough to keep the title to himself.
