Biel 1993 Interzonal

◈A Swiss for the Candidates

In the classical world-championship cycle, the Interzonal sat between the regional Zonals and the elite Candidates matches: a single vast tournament that thinned the world's grandmasters down to a handful of challengers. Biel 1993, held at the Congress House from 16 to 31 July, gathered a field of more than seventy players for a thirteen-round Swiss, with ten qualifying places on the line for the FIDE cycle leading to the 1996 title.

The strength ran deep. Rising talents such as Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand were in the field alongside established stars like Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov, Judit Polgár and a young Veselin Topalov — and, remarkably, the 72-year-old former World Champion Vasily Smyslov, still competing among them.

◈Gelfand alone at the top

Boris Gelfand won it outright on 9/13, the only player to reach nine points and, like the tournament's other leaders, unbeaten across the fortnight. Behind him a large pack crowded on 8½. Ten players secured passage to the next stage: Gelfand, Paul van der Sterren, Gata Kamsky, Alexander Khalifman, Michael Adams, Leonid Yudasin, Valery Salov, Joël Lautier, Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand.

◈The end of an era

Biel 1993 proved to be the final Interzonal tournament. That same year the world championship fractured, as Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short broke away from FIDE to play their match outside its umbrella; in the reorganisation that followed, FIDE abandoned the Zonal–Interzonal–Candidates ladder and eventually replaced it with a single large knockout championship. The long tradition of the Interzonal, which had produced challengers since the 1940s, ended here.
