The eighth Louis D. Statham Masters brought a record 68 players to Lone Pine for nine rounds. Bent Larsen came back from a first-round loss to Jon Speelman to win outright with 7½/9, half a point ahead of Lev Polugaevsky. 299 of the 300 games survive.
Statham's desert tournament reaches its peak
Louis D. Statham's invitation tournament had grown from a strong American masters' event into an international fixture. Its eighth edition set a Lone Pine record with 68 players and an average rating of 2431. A contemporary Danish report counted 23 grandmasters in a field whose first-round pairings still produced six upsets and eleven draws despite rating gaps of roughly 150 to 200 points.
The larger international field created exceptional title opportunities. Eleven norms were earned: grandmaster norms by Jack Peters, Vitaly Zaltsman, Kenneth Rogoff and Peter Biyiasas, and international-master norms by Yasser Seirawan, Timothy Taylor, Jaime Sunye Neto, Jon Speelman, Haukur Angantysson, Margeir Petursson and Helgi Olafsson.
Larsen answers an opening-round defeat
Larsen's tournament began with a sharp reversal when the 21-year-old Jon Speelman defeated him in round one, Speelman's first victory over a grandmaster. Larsen then scored seven wins and one draw across the remaining eight rounds. His last-round win over Kenneth Rogoff completed a 7½-point total and secured first place without a tie-break.
Lev Polugaevsky finished second on 7/9. Lajos Portisch, Anatoly Lein and Jack Peters shared the next score group on 6½, while former World Champion Tigran Petrosian joined Larry Evans, Rogoff, Hans Ree and Vitaly Zaltsman on 6.
The 300th game
The published final table lists 300 results, and the players' scores add up to 300 points. One of them, Dragoljub Janosevic's win over Asgeir Arnason, survives only as a 1–0 result without moves; no copy of the game turned up anywhere in 1977–79. The other 299 games match every published result.
