Twenty masters gathered in the great hall of the Amsterdam stock exchange in the winter of 1950 for one of the strongest open international tournaments of the immediate post-war years. With the Soviet players absent, it became a stage for the Western elite — and Miguel Najdorf seized it, sweeping through nineteen rounds without a single loss to finish a full point clear of Samuel Reshevsky.
A tournament without the Soviets
Staged in the winter of 1950 in the trading hall of the Amsterdam stock exchange, the tournament was organised by Lodewijk Prins, backed by a committee presided over by Hendrik Jan van Steenis. Twenty players contested a single round-robin of nineteen rounds — 190 games in all.
The most conspicuous names were the ones not present: the Soviet Chess Federation declined its invitations, and its players would refrain from Western international competitions until late 1952. Their absence left the field to the strongest masters of the West, a generational mix that ran from the pre-war veteran Savielly Tartakower to the 23-year-old Dutchman Jan Hein Donner.
Najdorf, unbeaten to the front
Najdorf won clear first place undefeated, scoring 15 out of 19. A single point behind, Samuel Reshevsky also finished without a loss, taking sole second on 14. Gideon Ståhlberg matched Reshevsky's tally of wins but fell half a point short of second, settling for third on 13½.
Behind the leaders the placings were tightly bunched: Vasja Pirc and Svetozar Gligorić shared fourth on 12, and the former World Champion Max Euwe tied with Herman Pilnik on 11½. Nicolas Rossolimo took the brilliancy prize for a 55-move win over Theo van Scheltinga.
What it meant for Najdorf
For Najdorf, the result confirmed his standing among the world's very best in the years when the Soviet stars stayed home. Argentina's adopted champion had already made his name at Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata; the Amsterdam victory, achieved against a deep Western field and without conceding a game, ranks among the finest tournament performances of his career.
