Four champions share first — and the Soviet quota bites again

The 1964 Amsterdam Interzonal ended in a four-way tie for first between Vasily Smyslov, Bent Larsen, Boris Spassky and Mikhail Tal — three past or future world champions and the finest player the West had produced in a generation. Below them the tournament turned on an old rule: with only three players allowed from any one country, Leonid Stein and David Bronstein finished fifth and sixth and still went home.

◈An exceptionally strong field

Twenty-four players contested a single round-robin of 276 games in Amsterdam, with six places in the 1965 Candidates Matches at stake. The Soviet delegation alone was daunting — Smyslov, Spassky, Tal, Stein and Bronstein — and around them stood Larsen, Borislav Ivkov, Samuel Reshevsky, Lajos Portisch, Gligorić and more. It was one of the deepest Interzonals ever held.

At the top, no one could break clear.

◈A four-way tie for first

Smyslov, Larsen, Spassky and Tal all finished on 17/23 to share first place. Smyslov, a former world champion, and Tal, the champion of 1960, were joined by the rising Spassky and by Larsen — the Danish grandmaster who was fast becoming the leading non-Soviet player in the world. All four advanced to the Candidates Matches.

◈The quota, and a play-off for the last seat

FIDE allowed no more than three qualifiers from a single federation. Smyslov, Spassky and Tal filled the Soviet allotment, so Stein (fifth, 16½) and Bronstein (sixth, 16) were both shut out — a bitter repeat for Stein, who had won a qualifying play-off two years earlier at Stockholm only to be barred on the same grounds. Their places passed down the table.

Ivkov, seventh on 15, took the fifth qualifying spot. The sixth and last was decided by a play-off between Portisch and Reshevsky, who had tied for eighth on 14½: Portisch won it 2½–½ to complete the field of Candidates.
