The 1967 Sousse Interzonal was a qualifying stage on the road to the world title, and it produced two stories at once: Bent Larsen's commanding, outright victory, and Bobby Fischer's dramatic mid-tournament withdrawal while leading the field.
An Interzonal on the Tunisian coast
Sousse 1967 was the Interzonal of the 1967–69 World Championship cycle, gathering twenty-three players who had come through the zonal qualifiers. They contested a single round-robin over twenty-two rounds. The top six finishers would advance to the 1968 Candidates matches, joining Boris Spassky and Mikhail Tal, who were seeded directly as the beaten finalists of the previous cycle.
The field was deep — Larsen, Korchnoi, Geller, Gligorić, Portisch, Reshevsky, Hort, Stein and the young Henrique Mecking among them — but the tournament was dominated in its early rounds by a player who would ultimately not finish it.
Fischer's storm and departure
Bobby Fischer began at a furious pace, scoring seven wins and three draws in his first ten games for 8½/10 and a clear lead. Then, in a dispute with the organisers over playing conditions and scheduling, he abandoned the event. Because he had withdrawn before completing half of his games, his results were annulled and not counted in his opponents' totals.
Fischer's ten games survive in this archive, but they do not figure in the official standings — exactly as the tournament recorded them at the time. His departure remains one of the most famous walkouts in chess history, and it reshaped the fight for the qualifying places.
Larsen prevails; a play-off in Los Angeles
With Fischer gone, Bent Larsen won the round-robin outright on 15½/21, a point and a half clear of the chasing pack. Korchnoi, Geller and Gligorić shared second through fourth on 14, and Portisch took fifth with 13½.
Reshevsky, Hort and Stein tied on 13 for the sixth and last Candidates place. A playoff in Los Angeles in 1968 also ended level, and Samuel Reshevsky took the last spot on tiebreak. The Los Angeles playoff games are included here with the Interzonal.
