Saltsjöbaden 1952 Interzonal

Kotov's runaway — undefeated, three points clear
September – October 1952 · Saltsjöbaden, Sweden
Kotov won with 16½/20

Saltsjöbaden hosted its second Interzonal in 1952, and it produced one of the most dominant performances in the qualification cycle's history. Alexander Kotov swept through a strong twenty-one-player field without losing a game, finishing a full three points clear of the pack — the career-best result of a formidable attacking master.

A landslide at Saltsjöbaden

The 1952 Interzonal returned to Saltsjöbaden, the Swedish resort near Stockholm that had staged the inaugural event in 1948. Twenty-one players contested a single round-robin of 210 games; the leaders would advance to the 1953 Candidates in Switzerland to decide Botvinnik's next challenger.

Alexander Kotov won on 16½/20 and, in a field this strong, didn't lose a game, finishing three points clear of Tigran Petrosian and Mark Taimanov, who shared second on 13½. His biographers consider it perhaps the best result of his career.

A field of future Candidates

Behind Kotov the pursuit was fierce and Soviet-dominated: Petrosian and Taimanov tied for second, with Efim Geller close behind on 13. The next places went to Svetozar Gligorić, Gideon Ståhlberg, László Szabó and Yuri Averbakh, and the top eight all earned tickets to the Candidates.

The qualifiers read as a roll-call of the era's elite — Kotov, Petrosian, Taimanov, Geller, Averbakh, Ståhlberg, Szabó and Gligorić — and several would shape the world championship for years to come. Petrosian in particular used the 1953 Candidates that followed as the springboard to a career that ended with the world crown in 1963.
